Metcalfe breaks Albacete lap record

Formula Renault UK race-winner Jeremy Metcalfe returned home to England yesterday on the crest of a wave having shown outstanding pace during three days of intensive winter testing at Albacete in Spain. The 17-year-old driver, from Fleet in Hampshire, has rapidly become one of the hottest properties in the Formula Renault UK Championship, thanks largely to his impressive performance in November’s four-round winter series where he secured his maiden category victory after an imperious drive at Croft during the championship finale.Having already underlined his promise as one-to-watch in 2006, Jeremy began the three-day Albacete test with front-running outfit Team AKA in superb fashion and rapidly posted a quickest time of 1m 25.3 seconds, just under a full second inside the previous best set by a Formula Renault driver at the Spanish venue.“All three days were really good”, commented Jeremy, “We lapped consistently fast and I’m very pleased indeed to have come away from Albacete with the fastest ever time set by a Formula Renault there. It’s a fantastic circuit but is very hard on the tyres as there are so many corners. “After showing the pace we were capable of we then concentrated on the set-up and I started to learn a lot about the car and the way it handles in certain situations. It’s been a really productive test, thoroughly enjoyable.“We’ll have a break now over Christmas and New Year and then return to testing in late January. It’s only approximately one month then until the testing ban is put in place and official pre-season championship testing starts – I really can’t wait.”Prior to travelling to Spain, Jeremy also impressed in winter testing at Cheshire’s Oulton Park, an integral venue on the 2006 Formula Renault UK Championship calendar.Provisionally, the 20-race 2006 season is scheduled to start on 8th/9th April at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit in Kent and is expected to conclude at Silverstone National Circuit in Northamptonshire on 14th/15th October.
