Motors TV Weekly Highlights

14-20 January 2006 - Sky Digital Channel 413 and NTL channel 173

Motors TV will be showing renowned film-maker Helmut Deimel’s seminal work charting the history of rallying, The Evolution Of Sideways, in two parts. From its beginnings in the 1950s as a pastime for the rich, the film follows the emergence of the Scandinavian heroes, like Erik Carlsson, the group B era and the development of the latest breed of high-tech machinery. Deimel’s work is full of incredible archive footage of every aspect of this fascinating sport and from every iconic location: the plains of Africa, the car-breaking Greek gravel tracks and mountainous tarmac switchbacks like the world famous Col de Turini. It also features interviews with the heroes that have shaped the sport over six decades and for anyone with the slightest interest in rallying and motorsport, is a must-see.

 CORR Championship, rounds 3-6

The American Championship Off Road Racing (CORR) series hit Wisconsin in June 2005, for rounds 3 & 4 of the 2005 championship at Antigo and rounds 5 & 6 two weeks later at Crandon. Carl Renezeder was looking to maintain his momentum, having won the first two rounds of the series but the Baldwin brothers, Josh and Jason, had other ideas and sought to stop their brother-in-law’s march. The following race weekend saw the three drivers battling hard again, with wins mixed up and a few mechanical gremlins thrown in for good measure.

British motorsport veteran Chris Hodgetts has competed in almost every form of motorsport worth driving and remains the last British driver to win back-to-back British Touring Car Championship titles, in 1986 and 1987. He also took no less than eight class championships in the BTCC’s heyday, from 1980-1990. This program charts his 1987 BTCC season, as he successfully defended his crown in his Toyota Corolla.

Andros Trophy, Round 5, Lans en Vercors

The fifth round of the winter ice racing series takes the competitors to Lans en Vercors, to the south-east of Grenoble. Situated in the Vercors national park, the 800m circuit sits at an altitude of 1400m, so the snow and ice are likely to be as cold as the competition is hot. And if racing cars on ice isn’t exciting enough, coverage of the motorbike class follows immediately afterwards.
