Davies delight at Fiesta chance

Rising Welsh rally star Kevin Davies has announced his plans for the 2006 rally season.  The 20 year old from Llanfihangel-ar-Arth in West Wales will contest the Fiesta SportingTrophy, the exciting new 'one make' rally championship organised by M-Sport, the team behind Ford's World Rally Championship activities. The all new series is designed to offer affordable, highly competitive rallying in identical specification cars, and Davies is looking forward to stepping up to the challenge posed after a highly successful first season last year.  Starting 2005 with just one forest rally behind him experience wise, the youngster quickly asserted his authority on class 'A5' of the Silkolene 1400 National Rally Championship as he took six class wins from six starts in his Nissan Micra Kit Car.  The Geoff Jones Motorsport run machine never missed a beat all season, and Davies was duly crowned champion after a string of impressive class and overall placings. For 2006, Davies will certainly have some new challenges to face up to.  Kevin has competed on just one of the eight rounds that make up the Fiesta SportingTrophy, and his newly acquired Ford Fiesta ST150 is also left hand drive - another new experience for Davies to adjust to.  Llandysul's Emyr Jones remains as a positive influence in the co-driver seat, and the pair cannot wait to get started on a new challenge. The Geoff Jones Motorsport run team is attending a filming day with S4C today in South Wales, so it is valuable time in the brand new car for Kevin.  Any extra time spent driving the car will be crucial for Davies, who will travel across the UK this season in his quest.  Starting in M-Sport's native Lake District/Cumbria with the Malcolm Wilson Rally, the championship then heads east across the A66 to the North East for the Pirelli National Rally, based in the famous 'killer' Kielder forest.  Kevin then gets a trip closer to home as he then faces the challenges of the Mid Wales forests on the Mutiny Rally, before heading to the Scottish borders for the Jim Clark Memorial Rally, and the first tarmac round of the year.  Kevin's best chances may come on the next two rounds as they are most local to him - the Swansea Bay Rally, and the daunting Mewla Rally, based on the fearsome Epynt military ranges.  A final trip up the M6 for the penultimate round will see Kevin and Emyr contest the Park Systems Rally, before heading back to North Wales for the season ending Bulldog Rally.  All events are one day long, and will offer a major test of Kevin's abilities this year.Kevin, naturally,  is keen to get started:'I'm really looking forward to the Fiesta SportingTrophy this year.  It is a level playing field for everyone contesting it, and M-Sport have produced a fantastic package at a sensible and affordable price.  The car is really well thought out and feels great to drive.  There will be a lot for me to learn changing to a left hand drive car for the first time, but I am sure I can adapt to that quickly enough.  At the moment it isn't very clear exactly who is contesting the series, but I am expecting a very high quality entry for the Malcolm Wilson Rally in March.  Our ambitions are quite clear.  We want to give our best on every rally and I hope that we can feature in the overall results in the process.  I learned a great deal last season with the GJM team and I'm very pleased to be working with them again this year.  I'm sure that together we can all work together for a successful year.  I just can't wait to get started now!'Davies will be out testing the Fiesta soon in readiness for the Malcolm Wilson Rally on 11th March, based in Cockermouth, the home of the M-Sport operations.  Kevin's Fiesta will also be on display at the forthcoming Autosport International Show at the NEC in Birmingham.
