Metcalfe confirms AKA deal
Formula Renault UK race winner Jeremy Metcalfe has confirmed he will contest the 2006 championship with Leicestershire-based Team AKA, continuing the successful partnership which helped guide the teenager to his maiden category win last November. The 17-year-old, from Fleet in Hampshire, has flourished as a driver since his first competitive outing with AKA during the 2005 Formula Renault UK Winter Championship and the newly agreed deal will ensure great continuity in his quest for race victories and a strong title challenge. While not under any misconceptions about the size of the task ahead, Jeremy will carry a deserved confidence into the new season – which begins at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit in Kent on 8th/9th April - and will be aiming to add to his first win in what is rightly regarded as the most competitive junior single-seater championship in the world.Headed by reigning British GT Champion and former McLaren Autosport BRDC ‘Young Driver of the Year’ Andrew Kirkaldy, Team AKA has rapidly become one of the most highly respected and successful teams in the Formula Renault UK Championship since its inception just two years ago.In 2005, AKA guided McLaren Autosport BRDC ‘Young Driver of the Year’ Award finalist James Jakes to third position in the Formula Renault UK standings, while team-mate Alex Storckenfeldt ended the season sixth overall with four victories to his credit.“I’m absolutely delighted to have agreed terms on a new deal with AKA, it’s fantastic for us and if winter testing is anything to go by I think we can feel very confident ahead of the new season”, said Jeremy.“I’ve gelled brilliantly with the team since the start of our relationship and as far as I’m concerned, AKA is the number one outfit in Formula Renault with the best engineer (Paul Jackson) in the whole championship. Andrew’s (Kirkaldy) experience too has been invaluable and has enabled my driving to come on in leaps and bounds.“I believe I’ll be in a good position right from the off this year and my own personal aim is to finish in the top three in the championship. I think that’s a realistic goal and hopefully I’ll be able to achieve it. Winning my first race last November has given me a lot of confidence, I can’t wait now to be back out there racing wheel-to-wheel.”
