Following on from the GT Battle event in 2005 where Time Attack appeared for the first time in Europe, NRG Events Ltd hasannounced the formation of a full Time Attack Series for 2006.
Time Attack is a circuit based event, originally conceived in Japan. It was created for aftermarket tuners to prove the performance of the cars that they were creating, giving official recognition to their performance that would normally be seen on the road - instead demonstrating their expertise on the track.
It consists of entrants racing against the clock to set the quickest timed lap around a circuit under Time Attack conditions. Unlike sprinting, Time Attack uses the full circuit, providing full lap results from a ‘ flying start ‘ where competitors drive on the edge and beyond to set lap records under professional conditions and at major recognised circuits. Each competitor laps the circuit on solo runs without traffic, to record the optimum time achievable. Open to all vehicles, not only Japanese, the Series will operate on a highly exclusive ’invitation only‘ basis, with competitors being hand picked by NRG to include cars prepared by the industry leaders as well as privateers all wanting to show exactly who is the quickest.
The SeriesHeld at major race circuits in the UK and attended by the tuning industries finest, it will form part of the NRG Events line-up for 2006, running alongside the D1GB National Championship for drifting. Six point scoring rounds will be held from May to October with a maximum grid line-up of 25 vehicles, divided into three classes: Front Wheel Drive, Rear Wheel Drive and Four Wheel Drive. The Series kicks off on April 15/16th for a media and test day at Donington where teams and drivers will be able shake down their cars for the first time this year in preparation for Round 1 in May. The full Series calendar will be released at the end of January.
NRG’s Glen Horncastle commented ‘ Time Attack is an exciting addition to our events line-up as it provides a proving ground to Europe’s most credited aftermarket tuners to show exactly what they can produce and in repeatable conditions at recognised circuits. Already the response from the industry is that of relief that they will finally have the ultimate test to put their cars through and alongside those of their competitors, not forgetting in some cases the privateers with high specification vehicles.
As entry numbers are limited by invitation, you can expect to see the high quality of Europe’s most famous, quickest and reputable cars performing on track - and that will be a marvel to witness. The heat is well and truly on for this guys to perform under such demanding conditions.’
NRG’s Andy Barnes added ‘ 2006 is an exciting year for the aftermarket industry in the UK, not only will it see the first ever D1GB Championship for Drift but it will also see a Time Attack Series of competitions where circuit/fast road based cars can actually go head to head on a circuit under intense conditions. These combined events form the base of our firm intention to provide the aftermarket with its own specific motorsport, fueling the revolution in the aftermarket which is happening right now as more realise that real performance and tuning is what counts, regardless of the car you drive or its use. ‘
