RTE to show WRC highlights for 1st time

For the first time, RTÉ is to show highlights of each round of the World Rally Championship (WRC). This coverage will start this Tuesday (24th January) airing highlights of the Monte Carlo Rally.

Head of RTÉ Sport, Glen Killane said, "We are delighted to be bringing highlights of the WRC to our viewers for the first time. RTÉ's coverage of this year's competition is timely with Ireland bidding to qualify for a round of the championship in 2007. Our coverage should whet the appetite of the public for the sport and give them an insight into what they could expect if a round of the WRC is staged here next year."

OB Sport, RTÉ's monthly sports magazine programme, travelled to the first rally of the WRC in Monte Carlo to see what it is all about and to talk to the Irish competitors taking part. The OB Sport programme covering Rally Ireland will be presented by former Olympic swimmer Chantal Gibney.

Irish competitors at the Monte Carlo rally were Austin McHale, Gareth McHale, and Eamon Boland. They also all took part in Rally Ireland 2005 and are expected to participate again in Rally Ireland 2006.

Sean O'Connor, Rally Ireland Co-Promoter sees it as another stepping stone for the Rally Ireland WRC qualification, "we are delighted that RTÉ is broadcasting the WRC highlights. This is just another way to educate the Irish people about rallying at WRC level and about its potential for the country. If successful in the bid, Rally Ireland would be worth in excess of EUR29 million to the economy on an annual basis."

WRC highlights will be shown on RTÉ Two at 12.25am tonight.
