Potter moves into HRCR Classics
Former ANCRO Clubmans front runner James Potter is the latest driver to switch to the HRCR Classic Stage Rally Championship for 2006 with his successful Escort Mk2.Potter and co-driver Bob Stokoe are converting to Classics in their well-known 'King of Shaves' backed car, which is currently having a 2-litre Holbay engine fitted ready for the opening event of 2006."It was time for a change and to do some different events," says Kent-based Potter, who started rallying in 1985. "My car has always stayed in period trim, apart from the engine, and this will give us a level playing field. We won't have to worry about anyone having a better spec than us."Potter has competed on every ANCRO Clubmans event over the last four years, twice finishing in the top three in the championship. The Cosworth engine he has been using has already been sold to Irish ace Dessie Keenan and is being replaced by the Holbay twin-cam unit. Potter's Escort was originally built by David Sutton Cars and was campaigned by Sutton's wife Jill Robinson the Castrol/Autosport Championships in 1976/77. It has since been owned by Mick Briant - who won the Motoring News road rally championship with it - as well as 'Mad' Mick Jones, who has been trying to buy it back for the last four years, claiming it to be the best handling Escort he has driven. The car will again be prepared by Grahame Standen Motorsport, the team that looks after the cars of Ernie Graham and Chris Browne."There are some very quick boys out there and I haven't done any tarmac events for many years," says Potter of his 2006 campaign, which will start on the Robin Hood Stages on 4/5 March. On events, the crew will again be handing out 'King of Shaves' samples to marshals, officials and fellow competitors!
