Kart Racers To Get One Shot At Limelight

Drivers in the Renault-sponsored classes of the British Karting Championship go into the 2006 season knowing they have one chance to win a place at a Formula One test by the World Champion Renault F1 Team at Silverstone on Thursday, April 27th.

The opening round of the Formula A, ICA and JICA championships will be held at Three Sisters circuit in Wigan on March 18th/19th with drivers knowing the championship leaders at the end of the weekend will win one of eight places at the exclusive test. They will be joined by the leader and Graduate Cup leader of the Formula Renault UK with Michelin championship, the leader of the Renault Clio Cup championship and the FR2000 and ‘Club’ class leaders of the Formula Renault BARC championship.

The test is scheduled earlier than in previous years, which means only one round of each championship will have been completed. This will ensure added pressure on drivers during the opening weekend of championships that promise to be more competitive than ever.

The leading drivers will attend the test at the home of British motorsport and will be treated to a behind the scenes tour of a Formula One team in action. World Champion Fernando Alonso and his team mate Giancarlo Fisichella are scheduled to take part in the test programme, in preparation for the British Grand Prix on Sunday, June 11th.

During the day, prize-winners will receive a tour of the paddock including a visit to the pit garages to get a close-up look at the R26 and a chance to view the telemetry readings, which will be explained by Renault Formula One technicians. They will then watch the R26 being put through its paces from an optimum vantage point at the circuit.

Tim Jackson, Renault UK Motorsport Manager, commented: “Once again we are delighted to offer our leading drivers the chance to experience such an exclusive event as a Formula One test. The start of any championship season is exciting but this year will be extra special given the prize on offer after the first round of each series.”
