Motors TV Highlights 4-10 February

Bikes, sand and tears

The legendary Le Touquet Enduro motorbike beach race has evolved into what is now the Le Touquet Enduropale, running for the first time in 2006. This race, held on the beachfront at Le Touquet in France’s Pas de Calais, now sees a 15.5km course laid out on the sand at low tide, but no longer running over the dunes between the beach and the town. Instead, 1000 riders will tackle the course, featuring chicanes and whoops to ensure Le Touquet remains a favourite with bike racing fans across the world. Motors TV will be showing the entire three hour race live.

The Cavalier spirit

John Cleland is probably one of the most famous names, and accents, in British motorsport. His racing career spans three decades and the latest edition of Motorsport Memory is the first of a two-part program, looking at his 1995 British Touring Car Championship season. The mid 1990s was the heyday of the BTCC, with no less than nine manufacturers taking part in the ’95 season. It would turn out to be a fiercely fought championship, and a pair of crashes early in the season led to a change in focus for the rest of the season to target the title crown.

Handling on Rails

The second program in the Steam Train Classics series, Relics of the Raj, takes the viewer to India, where Nick Lera looks at the various different gauge rail systems still in use. These range from narrow-gauge steam trains running alongside buses in the streets of Bengal to a steam cog railway that climbs to the tea plantations in Ooty.

Motorsport begins at 40

The TransAm race series is one of America’s longest running championships, celebrating its 40th year of running in 2005. It was expected to be one of the most hotly-contested seasons in recent years and arriving in San Jose for the sixth round, the smart money was on local boy and series leader, Randy Ruhlman. However, he certainly wouldn’t have it his own way, with just 24 points separating the top five drivers in the championship. And Paul Gentilozzi, the most successful driver in the history of the sport with 31 wins, was just six points further back.
