Murray impresses in Snetterton test
Potential Formula Renault BARC Championship debutant Chris Murray enjoyed a highly impressive maiden test with Russell Racing at Snetterton last week, the Doncaster-based team making full use of some near-exclusive track time at the Norfolk venue.Murray, a 26-year-old businessman from central London, aims to make his single-seater bow this year in Formula Renault BARC having been away from motorsport for several years while completing a degree in electronic engineering. With little karting experience to draw from, Murray’s performance throughout the first day of testing certainly impressed Russell Racing team manager Rob Croot, who said: “Chris really surprised me with his pace and ability and I think if he had been able to continue testing today he would have made even bigger strides forward.“We had the circuit to ourselves on Thursday so we were able to get a lot of mileage under our belts and we certainly learned a lot. Chris enjoyed himself in the car and I think he could surprise a few people if he chooses to race with us in Formula Renault BARC this year.”Murray himself added: “My aim is to definitely be on the Formula Renault BARC grid this year. I’m pleased with the test, particularly as it was my first time at Snetterton, but I’m setting very high standards for myself and I think with a few extra improvements to the basics I can be a very competitive driver.”Matt Russell continued his intensive pre-season testing programme over both days and the Harlesden 22-year-old was delighted with his performance, having posted lap times consistently close to those of 2005 Formula Ford Festival winner and McLaren Autosport BRDC Award finalist Duncan Tappy.“I’m very pleased with the way the test went and what we were able to learn”, explained Matt. “To be competitive in relation to Duncan Tappy was confidence-boosting for me, especially as we spent both days of the test using very old tyres. Things are certainly going well and we’re moving forward all the time.”The team now heads to Knockhill Circuit in Scotland for a two-day test which begins on Tuesday, 7th February. Scottish Formula Ford starlet Sarah Playfair will join the team at her home track but before then, the 20-year-old will be accompanied by Rob Croot to the Edinburgh International Conference Centre’s ‘Enterprise Show’ tomorrow, 4th February.Following its visit north of the border, Russell Racing is scheduled to test at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit in Kent before decamping to France for a three day evaluation starting on 21st February. Drivers requiring more information about the possibility of taking part in the French test should contact Rob Croot on 07976 222002.
