Wheldon to appear in Super Bowl ad

2005 IRL IndyCar® Series champion Dan Wheldon is among the athletes who will appear in a Super Bowl commercial to promote ESPN’s new mobile phone service.

 Wheldon, the first driver to capture the IndyCar Series and Indianapolis 500 championships in the same season, is the only race car driver featured in ad. The 60-second ad promotes ESPN Mobile, which will offer a variety of sports programming and analysis to subscribers’ cell phones. The service launches on Feb. 5.

 The ad, which showcases a fantasy world populated by athletes and sporting events, will appear during the second quarter of Super Bowl XL on Feb. 5. Also featured in the ad are several IndyCar Series cars.

 Among the other athletes to appear in the ad are baseball players Jim Edmonds, Torii Hunter, Juan Pierre, Huston Street and David Wells, basketball players Baron Davis  Stephon Marbury, Lisa Leslie, Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi, football player Antonio Gates, golfer Mike Weir, tennis player Robbie Ginepri and Olympic gold medal-winning gymnast Carly Patterson.
