Autosport International is widely regarded as the premier motorsport exhibition in the world. Taking place in Birmingham, UK in early January, it is the place for teams, manufacturers, constructors and suppliers to launch their motorsport programmes and products. It is also the first chance many of the public and media get to see cars and drivers as they prepare for the season ahead. Motors TV was at the 2006 event and shows the highlights in two back-to-back programmes, with the latest news and interviews.

The Ultimate Pedigree

The FIA Thoroughbred Grand Prix Championship is a wonderful demonstration of racing from the golden era of motorsport. Formula One cars from the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s compete against each other, in original specification and liveries. The vast majority are powered by the Cosworth DFV V8 engine, which is renowned as a masterpiece of design by Keith Duckworth, founder of Cosworth. Motors TV follows the championship as it travels around Europe and witnesses action as fierce as when these cars first raced, with some of the most evocative sights and sounds from motorsport.

 The Cavalier Spirit, Part 2

Part two of this Motorsport Memory program looks at the second half of John Cleland’s 1995 British Touring Car Championship season. Following a frantic start to the season, the experienced Scotsman concentrated on consistency rather than outright race wins and demonstrated just how effective this policy can be. A run of four race wins and 18 podium finishes resulted in him claiming the title, with a margin of almost 50 points over rival Alain Menu.

A Crash Course

Many people love motorsport for the technological development by engineers and designers, the innovation and adaptability of the strategists or the purity and skill of focused and motivated drivers. Others however, like to watch riders and drivers crashing and then walking away. The Best of Crash is a two-part program, showing what happens when it all goes wrong. Despite some spectacular offs, none of the riders and drivers featured were seriously hurt, demonstrating the incredible advances in safety in motorsport over the years.

A True Gentleman

For motor racing fans, particularly in France, Maurice Trintignant, or ‘Trint’, was a hero. In a career that spanned three decades, he competed in Formula One and sportscars with a flair that made him a national icon. His achievements included two Monaco Grand Prix victories, as well as the 1954 Le Mans endurance. Despite a huge accident in 1948 which almost claimed his life, he competed until the mid 1960s, when he gradually retired from the sport, much to the relief of his family. He went on to produce a wine called Le Petoulet (rat droppings), a legacy of a nickname he earned in motorsport. Motors TV looks in detail at the life of this charming and amiable character.
