Oval and Out

NASCAR is probably the most popular form of motorsport in America and it’s easy to understand why. Recognisable cars, huge grids, oval racetracks with spectacular racing action laid out in front of the crowds, amazing TV coverage and drivers with massive character. The 2006 NASCAR Busch Series kicks off in style at the Daytona International Speedway and as an added attraction, 2003 Champ Car champion Paul Tracy swaps open wheels for stock cars at the first round. Motors TV is showing the entire race live, with all the thrills and spills of this high speed series.

Superbikes and Superstars

The 2006 SuperBike World Championship series starts in February and many expect the ‘06 season to be one of the most exciting yet. Certainly reigning champion Troy Corser has set out his stall, by demonstrating what netted him the title in ’05. In pre-season testing at Phillip Island, he was consistently faster than during the ’05 race, which he won. But the Foggy Petronas team have also made significant progress over the winter, as have the other teams. The 2006 SBK World Championship preview takes an in-depth look at the upcoming season.

Gardner’s World Champion

This week’s edition of Motorsport Memory looks at Australian Wayne Gardner’s 1987 500cc GP motorbike season. It was a season that Gardner dominated, having spent a huge amount of time and effort over the winter developing the Honda NSR500. The year began on Honda’s home-ground and finished, for Gardner at least, in Brazil, as he clinched the title with one race to go. Nine pole positions, seven wins and four podiums resulted in 10,000 local residents turning out to welcome him home to Australia as World 500cc Champion.

An Ice Weekend

Despite the fact that the 2005/06 Andros Trophy will already have been decided, the cars and stars will travel to Canada mid-February to take part in the Challenge sur Glace Continental – Sherbrooke invitational race. The event also features motorbike ice speedway as well as rally cars competing on the frozen track. More than 20,000 spectators regularly turn up to watch the action, which sees the track reverse direction between races for added spectacle. Motors TV will show highlights of the event, as it follows the Andros Trophy regulars across the north Atlantic.
