Carwyn Harries has a Winter warm up

Llandysul driver Carwyn Harries made it two successful weekends of rallying in a row at the weekend, as he survived a last stage drama to secure a class win and 14th overall on the Telford Winter Stages Rally.Driving his Harries Plant Hire backed Peugeot 106 GTi, 18 year old Carwyn was keen to get more experience under his belt before starting his BRC 'Stars of the Future' Championship campaign on the Denbighshire Astra Stages Rally in April.  With fellow 18 year old Bronwydd resident Gareth Roberts alongside, the young pairing were keen to build on a successful outing on the recent Wyedean Rally.  Driving a Production specification Group N Subaru Impreza for the first time, the Welsh youngsters finished eighth in a competitive class, not putting a mark on the D&C Rallying Subaru in the process.Saturday morning would bring icy conditions at the Sweet Lamb testing complex near Llangurig, and Harries found his tyre choice for the opening two stages not to be ideal for the hard gravel roads.  A switch to Matador Tyres for the remainder of the event was to bring better fortune for the youngster, and as the day continued, his confidence increased as he put in some excellent stage times in the Peugeot. With the important driver and co-driver relationship improving all the time, Carwyn and Gareth were delighted to be holding the class lead going into the final loop of two stages.  The D&C Rallying run machine had been running perfectly all day long, but on the final stage disaster nearly forced the pair out of the rally.  A broken gearbox mounting meant that the Peugeot was stuck in gear, and worse still - the damage had also punctured the radiator, forcing the engine temperature to soar in the process.  Fortunately, just a few miles of public road lay between Carwyn and the finish of the rally, and he was able to nurse the Peugeot home to take a well deserved class win in the process.Harries was very satisfied with his outing:'At the moment its about getting as much practice in as we can before the serious competition begins' said Carwyn.  'Gareth and myself are both young and neither of us has great experience, so we're both learning very quickly.  We've been fortunate to receive help from Dorian Rees and his D&C Rallying preparation team, and that is certainly making life easier for us at the moment.  Today was very good - the conditions varied throughout the rally so it was an excellent learning day.  The car ran very well apart from the problem on the final stage, and Gareth and I were very happy with the class win.  We hope to get out on another rally before the Astra Stages to make sure we go there in a good frame of mind to do well'.Harries is contesting the 2006 BRC Stars of the Future Championship with Team Thompson Suzuki.  The Bedfordshire based team were convincing winners of the title last year with their Suzuki Ignis 1400 machine.  Now extensively re-developed to meet the new rules for 2006, Harries is hoping that the new changes to the car will give him the best possible chance of taking victories as the season progresses.  Harries and Roberts start their campaign for glory with the Denbighshire Astra Stages Rally in Llangollen on April 1st.
