Fiesta tester for new kid Kevin
Up and coming Welsh rally star Kevin Davies goes head to head with an amazing 23 identical Ford Fiesta ST150's on the Malcolm Wilson Rally next weekend. (March 11th). The Llanfihangel-ar-Arth based 21 year old will be making his debut in the brand new Ford Fiesta SportingTrophy, the most keenly anticipated one make rally championship for years in the UK.Backed by M-Sport, the team responsible for running the Ford World Rally Championship team, the championship has attracted a 'who's who' of premium young driving talent from all corners of the UK and Ireland. Reigning Silkolene 1400 National Rally Class Champion Kevin is very keen to get started this season. Partnered by Llandysul's Emyr Jones, Davies will pilot his Geoff Jones Motorsport built Fiesta on the Cockermouth based rally, using some of the Lake District's finest forest roads.Supporting Kevin this year will be David Harries and Co Wholesale Factors, along with motorsport sales specialists rallycarsales.net. Also keen to support the young Welsh driver in 2006 is X-Cite Motorsport Supplies and long term supporter, KJ's Eden Tours, all keen to back Kevin in this, his toughest challenge yet.After completely dominating the Silkolene 1400 National 'A5' category last season with six wins from six, Davies knows that the pressure is on for him to repeat that kind of consistency in the new Ford backed series, and the automotive student is prepared for the challenge that he will face:'Last season was just incredible really' said Kevin. 'When you consider it was my first season of rallying, we really did hit out targets for the season, and in fairness, we exceeded our own expectations. Finishing the season with Wales Rally GB, a round of the World Rally Championship truly was the icing on the cake. Hopefully we can continue our successes within the new Fiesta SportingTrophy. I'm under no illusions before the Malcolm Wilson Rally. Emyr and I will be competing against some very experienced crews with proven track records in single make series. As a result we'll feel a little new to the scene, but it is up to us to make our presence felt within the championship. Fortunately, I have a fantastic team around me in the shape of Geoff Jones Motorsport and my sponsors for the season, so I'm really up for the challenge now. The Fiesta is an excellent car, well designed and really good fun to drive too.'The Malcolm Wilson Rally holds good memories for Davies. The Cumbrian event was just his third outing in the GJM Nissan Micra Kit Car last season, and the youngster dominated his class to take a fine victory in the process. Using well know forests like Comb, Greystoke and the legendary Grizedale - Kevin will have to tackle 45 stage miles before reaching the finish back in Cockermouth next Saturday afternoon. After recently featuring on BBC1 Wales as part of 'The Big Welsh Challenge' TV program, Davies will look to put the celebrity status behind him as he looks for a solid result to kick off the new rally season.
