Racecar.com to defend Funcup title

Racecar.com's Uniroyal Beetle is to defend it's 2005 championship win in this year's 2006 Uniroyal Funcup.

Europe’s leading endurance race series celebrates dramatic growth in 5th anniversary year

The Uniroyal Fun Cup is expanding its grids as it enters its fifth year under new leadership. Paul Rose takes the helm as series director, with backing confirmed from Uniroyal for the ninth consecutive year.

Series director Paul Rose added, “We are extremely excited about this year. The grid has increased by thirty percent from 24 cars last year to 31 now. With all cars being equally matched and only driver ability to separate them we can expect some very exciting racing.”

The series aims to bring the fun into motor sport with cost effective, close and exciting racing. The race cars are built to a single specification, powered by a 130 bhp VW/Audi engine encased in a Beetle style body. All major units are sealed and no modifications permitted, keeping costs low.

Guy Frobisher, Marketing Director of Continental Tyre Group Ltd, is responsible for the Uniroyal brand. He commented, “When you consider that the Uniroyal Fun Cup launched in 1997 with just 17 cars in Belgium, its growth Europe wide is absolutely astounding. In the UK we will be approaching full capacity for some circuits soon with strong grids for every race. With over 30 cars in the series and 2 to 5 drivers per car we have around 90 drivers in the Fun Cup which surely makes this the most popular event for competitors in UK motor sport.”

The first event on the calendar in 2006 is a 5 hour race at Snetterton on April 8th.

TV coverage of each round can be seen on Sky Sports “Race World” programme.

There will be six UK rounds with a further 23 races across Europe available to UK teams at many famous circuits including Monza, Dijon, Zolder, Nurburgring and the prestigious Spa Francorchamps where last year’s grid for the 25 hour race reached an incredible one hundred and thirty-eight cars. Entries are expected this year from across Europe, including Germany, France, Spain, Holland, Italy, Belgium and the UK.
