Academy boost for rising star Kevin

Welsh rally driver Kevin Davies is celebrating after his inclusion in the new MSA Rally Academy for 2006.  Davies beat off fierce competition to gain one of just five places open to rally drivers under the age of 25 within the UK.  The 21 year old from Llanfihangel-Ar-Arth near Llandysul in West Wales is one of just two drivers from Wales to be selected for the prestigious Academy training.Devised by former World Rally Champion Robert Reid, the MSA backed Rally Academy is designed to enhance all aspects of a driver or co-drivers development during the early stages of their careers.  The areas include Sports Psychology, Fitness, Training, Nutrition and Injury prevention, and also the extremely important aspects of Marketing and Media training.  Competition strategy and driver development are other areas in which full training will be given in partnership with the Sports Science faculty at Edinburgh University. For Kevin, it was certainly a surprise phone call given the early stages of his career development, but a welcome one all the same:'I was quite shocked to get the call I must admit' said Kevin.  'Last year was my first season in the sport, and although we exceeded all our expectations with what we achieved, I never expected to make it into the MSA Rally Academy at my first attempt.  The opportunity to have advice and guidance from World Rally Champions like Robert Reid and Phil Mills is something I could only have dreamed about one month ago.'Davies inclusion in the MSA Rally Academy is far from a fluke however.  The Welshman was a dominant force in the Silkolene 1400 National Rally Championship last season in a Nissan Micra Kit Car, winning his class six times from six starts, showing both speed and maturity in the process.  2006 sees Davies stepping up his game to contest the Fiesta SportingTrophy, a new one make rally championship.  Kevin once again demonstrated his speed and consistency as he produced a rock solid performance to claim a fine 3rd on the opening round, the Malcolm Wilson Rally. With the next round scheduled to take place on the Pirelli National Rally in May, Davies is keen to make the most of the extra support he will now receive in his driver development.  The youngster is relishing the task ahead:'I've been presented with a golden opportunity to push my skills forward, and for that chance I am very grateful to the panel who chose me.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my past and present sponsors for all their efforts in giving me the chance to be here today.  Without their support, I would never have been in a position to be noticed in the first place.  The only thing I can do now is continue to give 100% with my rallying as I have always done.  A lot of hard work lies ahead to progress, but I'm going to do everything I can to make the most of the opportunity I have been presented with'.
