FORMULA 1 heroes and a host of celebrities are coming to Wales on the May Day Bank Holiday to thrill huge crowds with a display of racing skills, on a specially built track on the streets of the Cardiff.
And unable to contain his enthusiasm for the up-coming event, celebrity competitor Shane Lynch raced into the city today to get a feel for the venue. A committed petrolhead, the lucky Boyzone pop star got to arrive in the sportscar of his dreams; a Red Bull Formula 1 racing machine.
Cardiff will host the Red Bull Track Attack Final – a nationwide kart racing challenge - and the Red Bull Racing team and a host of celebrities will be in town to take part in the kart racing on a track built on the roads around the Oval Basin and the spectacular Millennium Centre. The event takes places on Monday May 1st.
“It’s going to be a blast! I’m really looking forward to Red Bull Track Attack,” said Lynch as he posed with the car at Cardiff’s historic Millennium Centre. “I love racing and I’ve always wondered how I’d fare against the best in the business and now I get to race a Formula One driver. Hopefully the whole of Cardiff will turn out to watch and then it will feel like a Grand Prix to me!”
Lynch and 11 other celebrities will be racing one of Red Bull’s drivers as part of the event, in which members of the public have been qualifying to take part since the start of the year.
Budding boy and girl racers have been setting laptimes at kart tracks up and down the UK this year, hoping to be fast enough to qualify for the ultimate prize – a race against a Formula 1 driver.
The fastest won through to regional heats which conclude this weekend, all competing for one of 14 places in the Cardiff final. Thousands are expected to line the streets to cheer on the ‘ordinary’ boys and girls as they race against the Red Bull Racing drivers.
It should be a thrilling day, not least because of the stars of sport and entertainment racing with Shane Lynch, These include Darren Campbell, the Olympic sprinter, Mylene Klass, CDUK presenter and Maggot, Goldie Lookin Chain's Big Brother competitor.
