Faulkner tops Carrera Cup testing

Damien Faulkner was in impressive form on home ground as he set the pace in testing ahead of rounds three and four of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB at Mondello Park Friday. Faulkner (Team Parker Racing) stormed to the top of the times with a best lap in 1m42.543s during a 16-lap race simulation run in the afternoon test session. His best lap left him at the top of the times, but two Carrera Cup debutants lapped within a fifth of a second of the reigning champion.“It was very consistent,” said Faulkner of his race distance run. “It looks like we’re in good shape and I did my best lap during that run.” Leading the chase of Faulkner were Danny Watts (Red Line Racing) and Michael Devaney (Porsche Cars GB), both of them preparing for their first races in the Carrera Cup.“I was just learning the lines and making sure I was driving it properly,” reported Watts after taking over the car raced to victory at Brands Hatch by Richard Westbrook. “I’ve not been to Mondello since 1999, so I’m pretty pleased.” Equally impressive was Dubliner Devaney in the Vertu-backed VIP car, as he prepared for his first race in anything other than a single-seater. “I have to be pleased with that,” he said after making a significant move up the times in the second session. “I’d have been happy to be top six at this stage,” he added as he acclimatised to the Porsche.Richard Williams was also making excellent progress at IN2RACING and posted fourth best time. “It’s just about getting time in the car,” he said after lapping fractionally quicker than Motorbase Performance pair Tim Harvey and Michael Caine. Jason Templeman (Team Parker Racing) was quietly confident in seventh, having elected not to use new tyres in testing, while Nigel Rice (Red Line Racing) headed the pro-am category in eighth place, despite a minor off into the gravel in the first session.Sam Edwards (Team Parker Racing) was ninth as he learnt the circuit for the first time, while another Mondello newcomer in the form of Phil Quaife (Motorbase Performance) completed the top 10 times.Leading times:1 Damien Faulkner (Team Parker Racing)          1m42.543s2 Danny Watts (Red Line Racing)                      1m42.668s3 Michael Devaney (Porsche Cars GB)                 1m42.738s4 Richard Williams (IN2RACING)                      1m43.164s5 Tim Harvey (Motorbase Performance)                  1m43.168s6 Michael Caine (Motorbase Performance)          1m43.571s7 Jason Templeman (Team Parker Racing)          1m43.817s8 Nigel Rice (Red Line Racing)                             1m44.049s9 Sam Edwards (Team Parker Racing)                   1m44.373s10 Phil Quaife (Motorbase Performance)                  1m44.983s
