Westbrook takes Supercup victory
British racer Richard Westbrook swept to a mighty victory in round two of the Porsche Michelin Supercup at the San Marino Grand Prix yesterday (Sunday 23 April) at Imola in Italy.Fresh from winning the opening two races in the Carrera Cup GB, Westbrook dominated the Supercup race to become the first British racer to win a full round of the championship for a decade.Westbrook took pole position by over half a second at one of his favourite tracks. "The car set-up was perfect for qualifying," he said of the Team Morellato car. "All I have to do now is carry on the good work. Today's result is excellent for the championship."In the race on Sunday morning in front of the packed Grand Prix crowd, Westbrook was edged back into second place off the start by Frenchman Fabrice Walfisch. By the end of the second lap, however, Westbrook had reclaimed the lead under braking for Variante Bassa and successfully defended it all the way to the end of the 13-lap race. "I did my usual messy start and to make things even worse there was a little oil from GP2 on my grid spot. But during the first four laps my car was an absolute dream," reported Westbrook. Westbrook now heads to round three of the Porsche Supercup at the Nürburgring (7 May) leading the championship by eight points from Belgium's David Saelens.
