Silverstone Supercar Showdown

Another season of top class motorsport is under starters orders at Silverstone - Silverstone Supercar Showdown (5-7 May) -

Another spectacular season of motorsport gets underway at Silverstone on the 5 – 7 May when the world famous home of the British Grand Prix will open its gates to thousands of fans for the Silverstone Supercar Showdown, featuring the opening round of the FIA GT Championship – the first of many top class national and international events that fans can look forward to at the Northamptonshire track in 2006.

For those with a love of supercars - the most powerful and spectacular dream cars of today - the Silverstone Supercar  Showdown  promises  to  be  one  of  the  major  attractions  of  the  year.  The  legendary  Grand  Prix circuit will become the battleground for the world’s motoring elite, when tens of millions of pounds worth of super-sexy cars, including Aston Martins, Ferraris, Porsches, Maseratis, Corvettes and many more, will be unleashed on one of the fastest and most exciting circuits in the world  for three days of spectacular, hard fought, high speed racing.

With plenty of on-track action, the undoubted centrepiece of the weekend will be the opening round of the FIA GT Championship, Britain’s only round of the series that features some of the most powerful and fastest road-based  cars  in  the  world.

This  event  is  particularly  special  to  British  race  fans  as  the  winner  will  be presented with the prestigious Royal Automobile Club Tourist Trophy.   Since 1905, this Trophy has been awarded to many of history’s best drivers, behind the wheel of the best cars of the day.

In last year’s truly  magnificent race, Aston Martin brought the Tourist Trophy back to its former glory, but with strong squads expected to feature in 2006, the legendary marque will need to be at its brilliant best for a repeat performance this time out.

The Royal Automobile Tourist Trophy itself will be transferred to Silverstone on Friday 5 May as part of the Silverstone Supercar Tour. A new addition for this year’s event, the Tour will see up to fifty supercars set off from  the  Royal  Automobile  Club  on  London’s  Pall  Mall,  under  police  escort,  on  a  pre-determined  80  mile route to Silverstone. On arrival, all supercars in the parade will set off on a parade lap around the Grand Prix circuit to officially mark the start of the three day event. Organisers  have  confirmed  that  Supercar  owners  can  still  take  part  in  the  Tour  and  official  opening ceremony.

Adding to the superlative entertainment on offer at the Silverstone Supercar Showdown, a dazzling selection of sportscar championships has been lined up on the top quality supporting bill. Most exciting, perhaps, are the   opening   two   rounds   of   the   Ferrari   Challenge   Trofeo   -   one   of   the   world's   ultimate   one-make championships, which this year sees the introduction of Maranello's latest Ferrari F430 Challenge race car. But  the  weekend  is  not  just  about  races.

Autograph  sessions,  pit-walks  and  an  ‘open-to-all’  paddock  will provide families and all ticket holders with exceptional access to the teams, stars and some spectacular cars. The centre of the circuit will also feature an amazing display of modern supercars, owned by manufacturers, distributors and Clubs, while air displays, trade stalls, Entertainment Zones and a fun fair, where all rides are FREE of charge, will add to the festival atmosphere and provide non-stop amusement for all the family.

Richard Phillips, Managing Director of Silverstone Circuits Limited, commented, “The Silverstone Supercar Showdown is the perfect event to kick off another fantastic season of motorsport at Silverstone.

“The  power  of  the  GT  cars  simply  takes  your  breath  away,  and  our  free  open  paddock  will  give  fans  the opportunity  to  immerse  themselves  in  the  event,  getting  up  close  and  personal  with  the  cars,  teams  and drivers.  Tickets  will  be  available  on  the  day,  but  we  strongly  recommend  people  book  in  advance.  These stunning cars look spectacular racing around the track and there is also plenty to keep families and younger fans entertained away from the track – we’re looking forward to a fantastic weekend.”

Tickets for the Silverstone Supercar Showdown are available from £10 for the Saturday if booked in advance (£15 on the day) and £15 for the Sunday (£20 on the day).

A special advance Weekend Ticket will also be available for £20 (£30 if purchased at the event). Hospitality suites, with spectacular trackside views, are also available for the Sunday from as little as £105 (plus VAT) per person.
