Chief Const. Brunstrom admits speeding

Caught speeding 3 times? - You are a dangerous criminal!!!!

PR310: Brunstrom admits speeding

Chief Constable Richard Brunstrom, famous as the 'mad mullah of the traffictaliban' because of his apparent obsession with speeding, (reportedly) admittedspeeding himself recently.

According to the Evening Leader he said: "Anyone who gets caught speeding threetimes is a dangerous criminal. These people are offenders and they arewriggling. The other day I found myself drifting over 30mph after I had justcome off the dual carriageway. I realised after just a few metres and correctedmyself straight away it can happen to anybody. If there had been a speed camerathere I would have been caught but it wouldn't have been the end of my licence.It’s not the same as getting caught three times. I have no sympathy at all foranyone who gets caught more than once for speeding."

Paul Smith, founder of the Safe Speed road safety campaign(www.safespeed.org.uk) said: "If even Mr Brunstrom cannot guarantee not toexceed the speed limit, we are all facing a 'tax lottery' every time we drive.The chance of losing 25% of our driving licences isn't great on any singlejourney but it is a real and constant threat."

"Mr Brunstrom thinks that those caught more than once are 'dangerous criminals'but with 32 million motorists running the camera gauntlet daily it's just amatter of bad luck for countless thousands of safe and responsible drivers."

"Mr Brunstrom's infernal cameras are a road safety disaster - road deaths havefailed to fall in the speed camera era and we are now over 1,000 lives a yearbehind expectation."

About Safe Speed================

The Safe Speed road safety campaign is primarily the work of engineer-turnedroad safety analyst Paul Smith.

Since setting up Safe Speed in 2001, Paul Smith, 50, an advanced motorist androad safety enthusiast, and a professional engineer of 25 years UK experience,has carried out over 10,000 hours working on the campaign with well over 5,000of those hours researching the overall effects of speed camera policy on UKroad safety. In addition to those 10,000 hours, Paul has funded to campaign tothe tune of £10,000.

We believe that this is more work in more detail than anything carried out byany other organisation. Paul's surprising conclusion is that overall speedcameras make our roads more dangerous. Paul has identified and reported anumber of major flaws and false assumptions in the claims made for speedcameras, and the whole "speed kills" system of road safety.

The inescapable conclusion is that we should urgently return to the excellentroad safety policies that gave us in the UK the safest roads in the World inthe first place. Far from saving lives, speed cameras are a dangerousdistraction.

Safe Speed does not campaign against speed limits or appropriate enforcementof motoring laws, but argues vigorously that automated speed enforcement isneither safe nor appropriate.

Safe Speed is very slimly funded by voluntary contributions to the web site.We are urgently seeking improved funding.

The Safe Speed web site contains more than 350,000 words of road safetyanalysis and information. We are seeking publishers for 'the book of the website'.

It has turned out to be quite an amazing story and there are opportunities forjournalists and broadcasters to explore how all this came about, what itmeans, and where road safety has gone so badly wrong.
