ONeill gets Carrera Cup VIP call up
Touring car racer Paul O'Neill will make his Carrera Cup debut when he races the VIP car in the Oulton Park rounds of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB on 13/14 May.O'Neill has been invited to race the new Vertu-backed 997-model Porsche 911GT3 Cup car as he works towards securing a full-time return to the BTCC. It will be his first race since the end of 2003 and O'Neill is elated at the opportunity to make a return to racing at his home track."It's the best news I've had for the last three years," said O'Neill. "I can't believe it! All of a sudden I got this phone call and I'm just so happy," says the Liverpool-based racer. "I'm over the moon to get back on the track and I'm massively grateful to everyone at Porsche Cars GB for the chance. My aim is to just go out there and enjoy it."O'Neill rose to prominence with a works BTCC drive and scored an emotional debut victory at Oulton Park. In more recent times he has come to terms with diabetes, but quickly worked back to full fitness. "I'm probably fitter now than I've ever been and I want to show that diabetes is not a hindrance to competing in motorsport. You can’t let diabetes take over your life and I still think I can get back into the BTCC.""It's a chance to remind people I'm still about and I just want to put my name out there. The BTCC paddock feels like home and Oulton Park is like a part of my family." Paul's sister Melanie, who backed his career as he moved up the racing ladder, and other family members will be on hand to support his return to racing.O'Neill will drive the 400bhp Porsche for the first time during the official Carrera Cup test sessions on Friday (12 May). "It's going to be a very different challenge to anything I've driven before, but I just want to do a good job and really enjoy the weekend."
