The cats whiskers – high performance, low emissions GTL diesel impresses the locals. “It is an African concept and a source of pride to the continent.” says Malawi Government
Lions welcomed the Sasol Chevron GTL Challenge’s team of adventurers as they reached Tanzania. The convoy came to a halt as the playful family group watched from a nearby tree.
Award winning cameraman, Nigel Bateson, whose work includes the fall of the Berlin Wall, the war in Bosnia and filming the wreck of the Titanic said:
“It was a fantastic moment. It just doesn’t happen. There were two cubs playing by the road with mum and auntie up a tree watching them. We got the cameras going. It was great.”
Ian Myburgh, the expedition leader, said:
“To be welcomed to Tanzania by a pack of lions was amazing. A once in a lifetime chance. GTL diesel is about high performance with lower environmental impacts but when you talk about natural power, in Africa the lion is king. We are taking an African story up our continent and to come face to face with an African icon on our trip was just remarkable.”
After twenty days on the road, the team are almost halfway through their challenge to showcase the world’s most advanced diesel fuel and champion the cause of the African Renaissance. Their message is that this is an advanced and African technology which can help tackle the global problem of vehicle pollution.
With the support of the South African Government, this message is receiving approval along the route. In Mozambique the team were told to go and showcase South Africa to the world whilst in Malawi, Mr Harry Chitenje, Deputy Director of Energy Affairs said:
“It is an African concept and a source of pride to the continent. “ He added: “Malawi will surely support them…. it is in line with the objectives of NEPAD.”
The team now has less than thirty days to complete their trip to Qatar in time for the plant opening. Ian Myburgh said:
"It’s tough already and the hardest parts are yet to come. But the welcome we’re getting as we travel through Africa together with experiences like the lions will carry us through.”
