Renault UK has announced Knockhill circuit in Scotland will host the Renault Race Day, which will be headlined by the Formula Renault UK with Michelin and ELF Renault Clio Cup Championships. The event will be held on Sunday, 18th June, with the two single-make series set to provide four thrilling races for Scottish motorsport fans.
The Renault Race Day marks the first time the two series have visited the circuit independently of the British Touring Car Championship since 1992, when the package, then known as TOCA, was created. Qualifying for all four races will be held on Saturday, 17th June, leaving Sunday clear for the serious racing action to take place.
In addition to the on-track action, local Renault dealers will contribute to a static product display featuring cars from across the Renault range including Renaultsport models. Guest of Honour will be Scottish former rally star Robbie Head, who competed for the Renault Dealer Rallying team from 1995-1997 and also drove for Renault at the Mount Stuart Motorsport Classic in 2003. Head gave Renault UK its first win when he took the 2-litre category of the 1996 Ulster Rally, adding a first British Championship win on the 1997 Pirelli Rally.
Head is one of many Scottish drivers with strong links to Renault, with Alan McNish a former Renault F1 Team test driver. In addition, Scottish drivers to have appeared in Renault Sport UK Championships include former Clio Cup driver and current AKA Lemac Team Manager Andrew Kirkaldy and reigning Clio Cup Champion Jonathan Adam. In 2000, brothers John and Ryan Dalziel competed in Formula Renault UK alongside that season’s Champion Kimi Raikkonen.
Both Formula Renault UK and Clio Cup Championships are key components of the BTCC support package in 2006 but are unable to visit Knockhill on 2nd/3rd September due to their involvement as support to the World Series by Renault meeting at Donington Park the following week. Formula Renault UK and Clio Cup teams and drivers are due to test at Donington Park on 6th/7th September respectively, an impractical timetable ahead of appearing on a Europe-wide stage.
Renault UK therefore made the decision to race at Knockhill independently, avoiding the need to remove the picturesque circuit from its calendar and guaranteeing Scottish race fans do not miss out on the action. Renault UK’s Motorsport Manager Tim Jackson commented: “We are delighted to have found a solution that enables us to visit Knockhill in 2006. Renault has a strong following in Scotland and it is important to us to have exposure in this market, while providing fans with great motorsport.”
Alongside general ticket sales via the circuit, a number of promotions are being conducted in local media offering tickets as prizes. General ticket prices are £15 for adults and £8 for children aged eight to 16, while under-8s get in free.
