Westbrook takes Supercup podium

Richard Westbrook maintained his lead in the Porsche Michelin Supercup with another great result in Spain today (Sunday 14 May). Westbrook claimed another podium finish with third place in front of the Spanish Grand Prix crowd at Barcelona.Westbrook qualified his Racing Team Morelatto Porsche third fastest on Saturday. “I don’t really like this circuit so I’m pleased with the result,” he reported. “The car’s set-up is good and I think I can do more in the race and improve on qualifying.”Starting on the second row of the grid, Westbrook was edged back to fourth place early on by the fast-starting Uwe Alzen, a Supercup veteran. In front were the Kadach Racing Team cars of David Saelens and Fabrice Walfisch. However, Westbrook was soon tucked in behind Alzen and spent many laps trying to find a way around the German ace. Finally, with four laps to go, Westbrook seized his chance as Alzen was busy trying to wrest second from Walfisch. With a bold move under braking, Westbrook squeezed ahead of Alzen into third and immediately set about closing the gap on Walfisch. But with the remaining laps fast running out, Westbrook just didn’t have time to mount an attack on Walfisch and had to be content with third place, less than half a second behind his rival.“Uwe is simply a Supercup master! No matter what I tried, he already knew it,” said Westbrook. “In the end, I was lucky enough to pass him and I’m pleased with third.”The results of the Spanish race keep Westbrook at the head of the Supercup points’ table after four races with 74 points, eight more than Saelens and 16 more than Walfisch. The fifth race of the season is at the Monaco Grand Prix in Monte Carlo on Sunday 28 May. The street race around the famous harbour is one of the most glamorous events on the motor racing calendar.
