WTCC: Yokohama Advans at Brands

The FIA World Touring Car Championship is set to hold a gripping event at one of the world’s legendary tracks – the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit this weekend (20 and 21 May).

What’s more if you can’t be trackside you have a better chance than ever before to see the racing on TV. As well as the usual Eurosport coverage, ITV1 is showing the action live on Sunday in its programme, combined with British Superbikes.

Andy Priaulx is reigning WTCC Champion and current championship leader. The Briton is coming to his home event with 70kg weight handicap after his success in the last two events, so he’s not optimistic of his chances of another win. Ten former British Touring Car drivers are set to compete with plenty of experience of the track. James Thompson is the most recent BTCC Champion on the WTCC grid. Having made the podium once so far in his SEAT and with only 20kg of ballast he’s got to be a contender for a podium appearance.

Yokohama ADVANs are on the WTCC cars for the first time this season so it’s been a tough task to develop a tyre over the winter. Now with four races under their belts the drivers have race experience and have formed their opinions. Andy Priaulx: “I think we’ve all been genuinely impressed. They have the consistency that we need and one of the best things is that they seem to be even on performance between the front and rear wheel drive cars which is a big achievement.”

James Thompson: “The tyres should be well suited to Brands Hatch. They’ve shown to be very durable and Brands is really hard on tyres.” Kazuyoshi Sekiguchi, Yokohama “We’re very pleased that the teams and drivers have been so positive about the tyres that we have developed. Hopefully they will play their part in what will surely be two fantastic races on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix track.” The main action is on Saturday with qualifying shown live at 2pm on Eurosport.

The back-to-back races start at 14.15 on Sunday and are in the ITV1 programme with highlights at 3pm on Eurosport.
