Harries flies to Red Dragon victory

18 year old Llandysul driver Carwyn Harries produced his best performance of a troubled season this weekend, as he won the Red Dragon 1400 Rally.  The Welshman made the most of his home advantage as he won by 38 seconds in his Thompson Suzuki backed Suzuki Ignis 1400, fending off the challenge from Scottish youngster David Bogie.Partnered by Carmarthen's Gareth Roberts, Harries was a last minute addition to the entry list in the Harries Embroidered Clothing backed Ignis.  After retirements on the opening rounds of the British Rally Championship's 'Stars of the Future' series, Harries was looking for a welcome change of luck. The Red Dragon 1400 Rally was a round of the BTRDA National 1400 Rally Championship, so Harries would have plenty of opposition to fend off on the Swansea based rally.  Using the forests of the South Wales valleys, the event offered 45 testing stage miles in the Crynant and Margam stages.  Harries started well, slotting into a solid second position behind runaway 1400 leader Neil Weaver.  Unfortunately for the championship leader, a rare mechanical problem was to force his retirement, and Harries inherited the lead as a result.  Young Scot David Bogie was pushing hard in second, and Harries had no time to reflect on his good start as the battle commenced between the teenage drivers.Harries was in no mood to let the lead slip, and he increased his slim lead over Bogie to around thirty seconds.  The Matador Tyres fitted to the Ignis were working perfectly in the greasy and slippy conditions, and Carwyn made the most of the extra traction.  His neat and tidy approach paid dividends in the difficult conditions, and both Harries and Roberts were delighted to take a 38 second victory from Bogie after a trouble free run.'It has been a long time coming, but finally we've got a decent result to show for our efforts' commented the winner.  'I must thank Dorian Rees and the D&C Rallying team for their efforts in helping us run the car today.  The car ran perfectly all day and both Gareth and myself were delighted with the way things went.  The support we have received from Matador Tyres was very welcome as well, as we certainly had the perfect tyre for the conditions today.  Hopefully this result will be the upturn in fortune we have been looking for after our recent bad patch.  I'm confident that we can get our season back on track now.'
