Renault Formula JICA karting latest
Jack Harvey (Bassingham, Lincolnshire) scored his first Renault Formula JICA victory at his local circuit – PFI near Newark – on Sunday (21st May).
Although he started the championship-points scoring final from pole position the 13 year-old only secured the win on the final lap of the 25 lap race.
Oliver Rowland (Penistone, S Yorkshire) proved a constant danger, taking advantage of the slippery conditions to pull alongside Harvey. The pair raced side-by-side between PFI’s hairpins several times in the opening laps, with Rowland taking control in the middle part of the race.
Harvey slipped to third place on lap six, behind a hard-charging Tom Patterson (Newchapel, Surrey), but Harvey mounted a comeback on lap 10.
After passing Patterson he watched Rowland run wide at the hairpin several times before making a successful challenge for the lead on lap 13. Rowland had not given up on the lead however, and repassed Harvey on the final lap, only to run wide across the grass, slipping to third by the end.
Harvey’s success was doubly rewarded when the second points scoring final was abandoned following a startline accident. Deteriorating weather conditions meant the Super One meeting was halted early with three races still to go, with double points awarded for the completed finals.
Harvey was delighted with his victory and confident he would have been able to repeat his victory if the second final had been run. Apart from a mechanical failure at Shenington, his results have steadily improved during what is his first season of karting in Renault Formula JICA and he is currently third in the championship at the half-way point of the season.
Jordan Chamberlain (Newport) was unable to repeat his commanding performance in the previous round of the Renault Formula JICA championship, but just managed to cling to his series lead. Chamberlain started and finished the sole final in 5th place although he had won a heat earlier in the day. He leads Oliver Rowland in the Renault Formula JICA Championship by just a single point with six points-scoring races in the B4 Super One kart series to go.
