Maassen to race Carrera Cup VIP car
American Le Mans Series racer Sascha Maassen will join the Porsche Carrera Cup GB at Thruxton on 3/4 June when he races the Vertu-backed VIP car for his first experience of the high-speed Hampshire track.Maassen is one of the most experienced Porsche racers in the world and is currently racing the Porsche RS Spyder in the ALMS, including taking part in a one-two finish in the most recent race at Mid-Ohio. "Right now, we are very happy with our results in America," he says. However, he will now jump into the Porsche Cars GB 997-model Porsche 911GT3 Cup for rounds seven and eight of the Carrera Cup at Thruxton, a circuit he has never seen before."I know how special the GT3 Cup car is to drive, but I've not driven it for over a year and I will need some time to get used to it again," says Maassen. "I have some new things to learn! I've never raced the latest model GT3 Cup car and Thruxton is definitely a new challenge as I've never done a race there before."Maassen's opposition will include Richard Westbrook, who will return to the Carrera Cup for the weekend after setting the pace in the Porsche Michelin Supercup. "I think Richard will be a good challenge," says Maassen, who is back in Europe during a break in the ALMS season. His first sight of the Thruxton circuit will be during the official Carrera Cup test sessions on Friday (2 June).
