Severns Up for Simon
Colwyn Bay's Simon Hughes will be a man on a mission on June 3rd. The 23 year old from Colwyn Bay is determined to make up for a bitterly disappointing outing on the recent Pirelli Trophy Rally. The Welshman started the event as a favourite for victory in the Fiesta SportingTrophy, but a day plagued by punctures and mechanical misfortune left the youngster deflated in every sense.Hughes and his Berwickshire based co-driver Claire Mole cannot wait for the forthcoming Severn Valley Clubman Rally as a result. Hughes has surprisingly little experience of the forest stages close to the Epynt Military ranges in Mid Wales. Having contested mostly British Rally Championship stages over the past few years, Simon has not competed in the likes of Cefn, Crychan and Gwibedog for a long time. Despite the lack of familiarity, the Welshman knows that he has the pace to win the third round of the popular Fiesta ST150 based championship. After taking a hard earned second on the opening round, Hughes looked to make his knowledge of the Kielder forests count on the Pirelli event. Fate determined otherwise, and Hughes was left to enjoy the scenery almost as much as the spectators when a driveshaft broke on the very first stage. Simon had no option but to nurse the Furrows for Ford backed Fiesta through the next two stages to service, dropping him way out of the Top 10 and out of the FST points race.Hughes bounced back in true style though, as he responded with fastest time on the very next stage. The MSA British Rally Elite Academy member was keen to remind his rivals that problems aside, Hughes will be a force to be reckoned with on the Builth Wells based rally this weekend:'I've got to say I'm looking forward to doing this event' said Simon after a brief test in North Wales. 'The car feels good. The driveshaft problem was just one of those things - it was a just a simple breakage and that is all you can say. Some days it goes for you and some against. I was particularly disappointed for our backer Furrows for Ford, as it was not a great start to our association with them. When the car was working well we set a very clear fastest time, and I think there is definitely more to come from the car and me, which is encouraging for us. The roads around the Epynt area are pretty quick and quite technical, so I think it will suit us very well. I think a few of the people we are up against will have a better knowledge of the stages than us, but it is all to play for on this one. We've no option but to push hard from the very first stage as we need to score well to make up for the Pirelli disappointment. I'm very confident that we can do well this weekend but we need to transfer that confidence into points on the board.'Hughes will tackle six special stages this weekend. 45 miles of Welsh terrain stand between Hughes and the finishing ramp, taking in some of the finest forest stages in the UK. The likes of Halfway and Crychan feature strongly in Wales Rally GB, the Welsh round of the FIA World Rally Championship. Simon will no doubt be hoping for a world class performance to match this weekend!
