Podium for Fiesta leader Davies

Kevin Davies finished on the podium after the third round of the Fiesta SportingTrophy, and maintains his grip on the championship at the top of the points table.  The 21 year old West Walian produced another polished performance during the Severn Valley Clubmans Rally, taking third in baking hot conditions at Builth Wells in Mid Wales.Supported by KJ's Eden Tours, David Harries and Co. and MM Ford of Aberystwyth, Davies was determined to get as many points as possible on the board after a fine start to the one make rally championship designed around the Ford Fiesta ST150.  With a second and third placed finish already under his belt, the Llanfihangel-ar-Arth based Welshman and Llandysul's Emyr Jones were looking forward to the forests near to the rally base at the Royal Welsh Showground.Davies started well, and soon slotted into a steady groove as he immediately found the pace, setting fastest time on the opening stage - by just 0.9 of a second in a little over 10 miles.  It was intense competition at the front of the Fiesta SportingTrophy field once more, and the www.rallycarsales.net and X-Cite Motorsport Supplies backed Fiesta was flying.  Davies lost the lead on the next stage to the hard charging Chris Moore, and the Welsh youngster was having to battle to keep ahead of the chasing pack in second.Kevin is rapidly forging a reputation for consistency as he continued to consolidate his second position as the rally moved into the forests of Gwibedog and Halfway.  Moore was driving superbly at the front of the field as he stretched his lead by a handful of seconds.  Behind Kevin, fellow MSA British Rally Elite Academy drivers Tom Walster and George Thomas were close behind, and Thomas in particular was looking a threat to Davies position.Entering the final stage of the rally, Davies was just three seconds ahead of Thomas.  A relatively short 5.6 mile stage in Cefn Llwydlo was all that stood between Davies and another second placed finish.  Unfortunately, the talented Welshman was to make the smallest of errors on one corner as he slid into a ditch, loosing a handful of seconds.  The four seconds dropped were enough to let Thomas through, and Kevin had mixed feelings over finishing third:'I'm a bit gutted to lose it on the last stage' said Davies.  'George was flying, but I was confident I could have held him off on the last stage.  Unfortunately the car just slipped a bit wide coming into one corner and we slipped into the ditch.  We didn't stop but it felt like an age as the car spun its wheels getting back onto the road.  Without that mistake I think we would have held the position, but it just goes to show how competitive the Fiesta series really is.  Of course, it is hardly the end of the world - we have now finished on the podium three times out of three this year, and we've shown we have the pace to win stages, but not events yet.  At the moment we just cannot afford to make a mistake as it is very important to keep scoring plenty of points.  Fortunately, we find ourselves in a strong position at the top of the championship, but there is still a long way to go.  I'm delighted with the progress we have made so far this year, and with tarmac next on the calendar, I'm hoping to put in another strong performance on the Jim Clark Memorial Rally.'Davies will seek to put his past experience of road rallying to good use on the tarmac lanes near to Duns, the small home town of the legendary late great racing driver Jim Clark.  Kevin will be hoping to maintain his lead in the championship in his Geoff Jones Motorsport run Fiesta on July 8th.
