Super Gatso, Super mistake

Autoexpress reports today of a "Super Gatso" speed camera.

Paul Smith, founder of the Safe Speed road safety campaign(safespeed.org.uk) said:

"After 14 years of speed cameras on UK roads they have been proved to be good at just one thing: making money. We certainly have not enjoyed the promised reductions in road deaths. In stead we have gone from being one of the fastest improving countries in Europe to being one of the slowest. That's largely because speed cameras have proved to be a deadly distraction for everyone - Police, Local authorities, road safety policy makers and drivers."

"No amount of technology will stop speed cameras from being a dangerous road safety red herring. It's really important that no one drives too fast - but neither speed cameras nor speed limits can tell us what too fast is. 'Too fast' depends on the conditions and speed limits and cameras know nothing about the conditions."

"We MUST scrap the cameras and get back to road safety policies based on skills, attitudes and responsibilities. That's real road safety. Anything less means more dead people."
