Be sure you watch GP2 next week

I am sure I am not alone when I say that from a spectating viewpoint this year's British GP left me somewhat underwhelmed.

After qualifying - the prospect of Fernado, Kimi and Michael battling out wheel to wheel seemed enticing - but in the end it kind of fizzled out - not taking anything away from Fernando's win.

Overtaking now takes place in the pitlane and the aerodynamic sophistication of the cars mean that downforce generated enables cars to take some of Silverstone's - mightiest corners flat out - with impunity.

This is all well and good but equally the cars' aerodynamic sensitivity means that following a car closely screws downforce/capability to stay in touch - which further mitigates against overtaking opportunities.

I found it all rather boring - in fact about as boring as the nauseating continual hyping of a certain British F1 driver - who has yet to deliver anything.

So what a breath of fresh air to see some real racing and OVERTAKING!!!!!! in the GP2 races. Here cars WITHOUT TRACTION CONTROL actually slide, race and the drivers manage to overtake other drivers.

Lewis Hamilton has been hyped for the past 10 years since Ron has been picking up the tab - but he wins every series he competes in - and he seems to have a real appetite for wheel to wheel combat. In the first race on Saturday I saw - despite 3 safety car periods where his lead advantage was negated - he just calmly cruised off into the distance.

I am led to believe from one of the guy's in the office that his start from 8th on the grid on Sunday in race 2 - and eventual drive through the field to the front and subsequent victory - with plenty of ballsy overtaking manouveres was terrific to watch.

So if you are a bit disillusioned with the tech regs and lack of racing in F1 - make sure you watch the GP2 coverage on ITV next Saturday - you'll get to see some racing AND a future British F1 star who is likely to win a race well before his first 100 starts.....
