Jordan retains third in Rallycross title

Andrew Jordan battled through tough conditions to maintain third place in the Quaife MSA British Rallycross Championship at the Anglesey circuit in North Wales on Sunday (18 June).Heavy rain throughout the day made conditions very difficult, but the 17 year-old from (Sutton Coldfield) coped well to score three second places in the heats and then race to fifth place in the final.Jordan was racing the 550bhp four-wheel drive Ford Focus built and run by the G-Tech team of former rallycross champion Will Gollop. However, the day was a challenge for the whole team as this was the first time that the car had been raced on a wet track. Throughout the day, Andrew and the team worked hard to tune the car to the track conditions.Through the three heats, Andrew finished second each time despite finishing one of the heats with damaged rear suspension after being hit by another car in a battle for position. During the heats, Andrew was also experimenting with starting techniques as the team worked to find the best way of getting the car launched off the grid. Later in the day, Andrew pulled off some great starts as he skilfully balanced the engine revs to counter wheelspin. However, for the super final he lined up behind the two-wheel drive Lotus of Dave Bellerby and, inevitably, the Lotus was slow off the line compared to the four-wheel drive cars. With no space to get around the Lotus, Andrew had to back off and that cost him places on the first lap. While championship leader Christopher Evans won clearly, Andrew battled hard in a five-car pack that ran nose-to-tail in the contest for second place. With a bold move he dived ahead of the Mitsubishi of Steve Hill to take fifth and nearly did the same to fourth-placed Pat Doran on the final lap."It was quite a tough day as we learned about the car in those conditions," reported Andrew, who celebrated his 17th birthday two weeks ago. "But that result keeps me third in the championship after three rounds."Round four will be held at the Blyton circuit in Lincolnshire on 2 July.Andrew Jordan is supported by John Guest, Shell, Pirtek, Quaife Engineering and Bill Gwynne Rally School.
