Don't replace vandalised cameras urges Safe Speed

According to a news release published on monday, Captain Gatso and his shadowy organisation 'Motorists Against Detection' (MAD) intend to step up their plans to vandalise speed cameras.

The Safe Speed campaign wishes to see speed cameras voluntarily removed from our roads, and urges that any that are vandalised should not be replaced.Instead the considerable cost should be spent on genuine road safety initiatives.

Paul Smith, founder of the Safe Speed road safety campaign(www.safespeed.org.uk) said: "It saddens me greatly to see the public forced into vandalism to make their point. Everyone should know that speed cameras don't make the roads safer, and many see them as an instrument of state oppression. It's no surprise to me that they get vandalised. The real surprise is that the authorities are stupid enough to carry on replacing them at huge cost even though the overall effect on road safety is negative."

"Genuine road safety policy needs to target dangerous behaviours, and clearly speed cameras cannot do this."

"I urge the authorities not to replace vandalised cameras - spend the cash on real road safety instead. It's time to own up - you got it wrong - very wrong."

Speed cameras are:- highway robbery- almost completely unnecessary- good at raising revenue- madness- responsible directly and indirectly for the trend failure in the fatal accident rate- a huge mistake- a huge waste of money

Speed cameras are NOT:- effective road safety devices- magic accident reducing machines- supported by good quality independent scientific evidence- capable of accurately targeting dangerous behaviours- based on sound analysis of crash causation- genuinely supported by the general public
