Richard Westbrook tightened his grip on the Porsche Michelin Supercup with two stunning race victories at Indianapolis over the weekend (1/2 July). The British racer dominated both races at the US Grand Prix to extend his championship lead in what was one of the most significant race weekends of his career. The weekend started perfectly at the legendary US racing venue when Westbrook took pole position for round seven in his Racing Team Morelatto Porsche 911GT3 Cup car."That was fantastic," reported Westbrook." My team prepared the car perfectly and I want to thank my mechanics. They do a great job. This is a very important pole position for me. We are now starting the second half of the season and we're still running at the front. That’s how it should be."Westbrook then added another pole position in the qualifying session for the second race to give himself the very best chance of extending his championship lead in the pair of races in front of a huge US audience. In the opening race, Westbrook got away into the lead from the start and was never challenged as his rivals suffered all sorts of dramas. Importantly, his major title rival David Saelens was sidelined by accident damage, as Westbrook won by over 10s from fellow British racer Kelvin Burt (MRS-PC Service Team PZM). “Normally you would never say a race was easy to win, but this was an exception," said Westbrook. "I can hardly believe it. This has to be my easiest victory. I got away well at the start and kept things under control. Nobody even got close to me and that was simply great."In the second race, Westbrook repeated his win by leading the race from lights to flag. It was his fourth win in eight rounds of the championship and further consolidated his points' lead. However, this time his rivals were closer as Alessandro Zampedri finished only a second behind. "This was a fabulous weekend! I scored two enormously important wins. Still, Alessandro didn’t make it easy for me, keeping me under pressure right from the start."Racing alongside Westbrook in the Morelatto team was Carrera Cup GB racer Richard Williams, who concluded a late deal to race at Indianapolis. Williams made excellent progress to work through to finish eighth in the opening race, but was forced to retire form the second race.Westbrook will now take his extended championship lead to round nine at the French Grand Prix at Magny Cours on Sunday 16 July.
