Poole driver Marcus Dodd is aiming for the top spot on this weekend's Swansea Bay National Rally. After being forced to retire when leading two rounds of the MSA National Gravel Rally Championship so far this year, the Flitewise.com backed Hyundai Accent WRC pilot will be on a mission for victory on July 22nd.Together with Hove's Andrew Bargery, Dodd will head along the M4 to Swansea for some of the toughest forest stages in Wales. Classic tests such as Rhondda, Tyle and Resolfen will demand the utmost of respect from Dodd who has won the event twice before. Having shown plenty of pace already this season, Marcus is hoping for a clean run in the valleys of South Wales. The Pirelli Tyres and Sunseeker Powerboats backed Accent has proved to be the fastest car in the championship this season, and now Marcus knows he needs to make the results count.Just two dropped scores are allowed under the championship's scoring regulations, so Dodd needs to score heavily on the remaining rounds to stand any chance of lifting the National title again. Despite retiring on the recent Severn Valley National Rally, Dodd was delighted with the speed of the car, and had pulled out a convincing lead before the engine suddenly lost power and eventually forced the multiple National Rally Champion to pull over and switch off the ailing unit.'Now the season starts to get interesting!' quipped Marcus ahead of the rally. 'I'm looking forward to Swansea. Stages are usually in very good condition and the speeds are high too. I've been very happy with the cars performance all year, but as with any new project developments, there will always be little teething problems. There's no doubt that when the car is running well we are more than capable of building a lead, so I'm heading to Wales with this in mind. Given the very hot weather expected this week, dust could play a major part in the outcome of the event, so that is something we'll need to bear in mind. Fortunately we know that dry and dusty stages suit the Pirelli tyres we have very well, so I'm very confident that we can fight for the win. More to the point, we have to! If we do not score well this weekend it will make the rest of the year very difficult for us, so that is something I am also aware of. H.P.M Motorsport have worked very hard all year to continue developing the car, so I'm very positive about our chances for Saturday.'Once again, Dodd is the figurehead of an impressive four car H.P.M Motorsport team on the Swansea based rally. Following in Marcus's wheel tracks will be his father, Harry Dodd. Together with Scottish co-driver Roy Campbell, the pair also suffered a mechanical failure on the Severn Valley National Rally in their identical Hyundai Accent WRC. A third Hyundai Accent WRC will also be present, driven by Hampshire's Peter Egerton. Peter recently contested the Ypres Rally in Belgium, and is now looking forward to returning to the gravel stages with Simon Staddon alongside. Last but not least in the H.P.M Motorsport squad are the Dorset Rally Police Team crew. Shaun Cronin takes the wheel of the Group N Subaru Impreza N8 as usual, and this time he will be partnered by Andy Williams. Backed by Petards and Road Angel, the Dorset Police Team have competed across the country so far this year to raise awareness of their road safety for younger drivers project.
