Westbrook extends Supercup lead

Richard Westbrook further extended his championship lead in the Porsche Michelin Supercup at Magny Cours during the French Grand Prix meeting (15/16 July). In hot and demanding conditions, Westbrook raced to third place to extend his championship lead to 47 points with just three races remaining. Importantly, he fended off his championship rival David Saelens after a tough battle.Westbrook qualified third in his Racing Team Morelatto Porsche 911GT3 Cup car, as he prepared to race at Magny Cours for the first time. With Saelens behind him on the grid, Westbrook's main target for the race was to finish ahead of his rival to maintain his substantial championship lead. The race went very much to plan, with Westbrook running third behind Richard Lietz and Patrick Huisman to finish third. However, he had to withstand tremendous pressure from Saelens for much of the race."That was tough. It was so hot, but I'm so happy to get another podium and for the championship it just couldn't look better," said an elated Westbrook."David pushed me all the way and it was a really hard race. But I just had enough at the end and I actually closed a little on Patrick over the last few laps. To get a podium at a track I don’t know, I'm just delighted!"Westbrook will now take his increased points lead into the next round in Germany on 30 July. With only two races to run after the German race, he has a real chance of securing the prestigious title and finishing ahead of Saelens at Hockenheim could be enough to make Westbrook the first British racer to be crowned Supercup champion.
