Mildenhall to race Carrera Cup VIP car

Racer turned journalist Owen Mildenhall will compete in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB at Donington Park on 29/30 July when he races the Vertu-backed VIP car in rounds 11 and 12 of the championship.Mildenhall is a road tester for Auto Express magazine, but has an extensive racing background. However, he had not raced a full season since 2000 and is relishing the prospect of making his Carrera Cup debut in the new 997-model 911GT3 Cup car.Mildenhall was a rising young single-seater star in the 1990s and won the Formula Ford First Division title in 1997. Later, he switched to sportscars and finished sixth in the 1999 Renault Spider Cup. Then, in 2000 he stepped up to the FIA Sports Car Championship to race a Pilbeam sports-prototype with Werner Lupberger for the Redman Bright team."I've done a few races since 2000, but nothing at the level of the Carrera Cup," he says. "I'm really looking forward to it, but I'm under no illusions about how tough it will be. I've never raced a Porsche before, but I just want to do a good job in the car."Since 2000, he has contested several endurance races, including events at Spa-Francorchamps and the Nurburgring Nordschleife. He also raced in the Silverstone 24 Hours last September and is currently planning to compete in the event again this year.Mildenhall will drive the 911GT3 Cup car for the first time during the official Carrera Cup test session at Donington Park on Thursday (27 July).
