Davies gets a dusty eighth
Kevin Davies remains in contention for the Fiesta SportingTrophy title, after finishing eighth on this weekends Swansea Bay Clubmans Rally. The 21 year old from Llanfihangel-ar-Arth near Llandysul is now third in the overall points standings.Held in dry and dusty conditions in the forest plantations around the Neath area, Davies was looking for a strong performance on stages he was very familiar with. The MSA British Rally Elite Academy member has twice contested rallies held on the same stages before, and was looking to make the most of his familiarity with the gravel roads, along with co-driver Emyr Jones.Backed by KJ's Eden Tours, David Harries and Co. and MM Ford of Aberystwyth, the Geoff Jones Motorsport prepared Fiesta ST150 seemed to be running fine on the stages, but Davies, like fellow front runner Simon Hughes, was disappointed with his early stage times. Both young drivers were at a loss to explain what the problem was, but Kevin was convinced that there was something not quite right with his car.Lack of effort was certainly not the reason why the times were not coming. Davies was pushing as hard as he could on the stages, but felt like he was going backwards in terms of the leaderboard. The Welshman was holding down a Top 10 position, but the cancellation of the short Walters Arena stage did not help Davies, as it was the stage he knew best on the rally.Kevin was dismayed to drop 20 seconds to series rival George Thomas on the final stage, Resolven. The 16 mile stage was the longest of the rally, and Davies was desperately unhappy to record a slow time. The www.rallycarsforsale.net and X-Cite Motorsport Supplies backed youngster just could not understand where the time loss was, and it was a disappointed Kevin who returned to the finish in Swansea in eighth place.'I just don't know what the problem was today' he remarked. 'I feel as though I've been pushing as hard as I could, and we were certainly taking the same lines as everyone else and driving as hard as we could. The car just doesn't seem 100% right. It might only by 98%, but that is enough to make such a difference in a championship as close as this one. I'm really disappointed to finish eighth, as this was the rally where I felt we stood our best chance of challenging for a win. However, there is a long way to go in the championship still, and there is still everything to play for. Every point is vital, so at least we have scored more points this time. I'm just a bit disappointed for everyone who supports our rallying as there really wasn't any more we could have done today, but the result just wasn't there'.Davies will contest the Harry Flatters Rally on Epynt next. The event is traditionally used by many crews as a warm up for the Mewla National Rally, which is the next round of the Fiesta series. Davies has never contested an event on the Epynt military ranges and its demanding tarmac roads. Kevin will look to put his tarmac experience to the test as the championship really begins to come alive with just three rounds to go before the title is decided.
