Tough tenth for Simon in Swansea

Colwyn Bay's Simon Hughes moved to fifth in the Fiesta SportingTrophy points table after a trouble free Swansea Bay Clubmans Rally this weekend.  The MSA British Rally Elite driver was mystified to be off the pace of the leading contenders on the event, as he finished an uncharacteristic 10th overall. After winning the last round on the tarmac of the Jim Clark Rally, the Furrows for Ford in Shropshire backed Welshman was looking forward to the challenge posed by the forests of the South Wales valleys.  Hughes and his Berwickshire co-driver Claire Mole were looking for another solid result to boost their chances of success in the one make series for identical Ford Fiesta ST150's.Dust was playing a major part in the early stages of the rally, and Hughes was struggling to get on the pace of the leaders.  Car and crew had been in excellent form just two weeks ago, but Hughes was not convinced that everything was as it should be with his Fiesta.  Although he could not identify a problem, Simon was struggling to get the best from the car, and was very disappointed to find himself on the fringes of the Top 10 early on.Pushing harder seemed to make no difference to the stage times, and Hughes was getting increasingly frustrated by the lack of competitiveness.  The problem remained throughout the afternoon's loop of stages near to the service park at Walters Arena, leaving Simon puzzled as to what the problem was.  The 23 year old was pleased to have scored points for finishing tenth, but the result means that Hughes will need to win all the remaining rounds to have any chance of winning the title.'I don't think I've had a stranger day in all my rallying career' said Hughes at the finish in Swansea.  'I just don't know what happened.  The harder we tried, the slower we got, and it just did not 'click' today.  I felt we were doing ok but the stage times show otherwise.  I really don't know what went wrong.  I hope that we'll find something with the car that might explain the reason why our pace disappeared, but in fairness the car was great on the Jim Clark and we couldn't fault it.  Championship wise it really makes it hard work to see us being able to win now.  Of course we'll never give up and we'll go to every event as we always do with victory in mind.  I just cannot put my finger on what went wrong today, but we'll head to the Mewla Rally in South Wales in better spirits I am sure'.Hughes will tackle the fearsome Epynt military roads of the Mewla National Rally next.  Simon and Claire contested the Tour of Epynt rally back in March of this year as a warm up for the Mewla.  In icy conditions, the pair took a strong class victory on the rally, and Simon will be keen to repeat that kind of result in a few weeks time.
