Vintage racing action at Bovingdon

Spedeworth South turned the clock back in time at Bovingdon on Sunday, July 23rd when the Historic Saloon Stock Cars took to the track.

The cars may have been vintage, but that did not stop the drivers from putting the pedal very firmly to the floor as soon as the green flag fell. Heat 1 saw the very hard charging 337 Mk II Cortina of Glen Webster take an early lead with the 5 Triumph of Marten Bell chasing hard. The bumpers were soon clashing in the prescribed stock car fashion, but Webster held on to take the first win of the day for the historic racing machines.

Heat 2 saw Webster (as previous winner) start from the back of the pack. The contact was extremely heavy in this race, with several of the veteran machines finding their way into the Bovingdon safety fence and Webster taking advantage of the chaos to power through and take his second win of the day.

All eyes were on Webster for the final to see if he could clinch the hat trick. The second the green flag fell the 555 Triumph Dolomite of Gavin Taber stormed off with the rest of the pack in hot pursuit. Taber began to build a commanding lead with the nearest challenger being 173 Dave Forest, also piloting a classic Triumph.

Alas for Chapman the hat trick was not to be as he spun out of the race in the closing stages. Taber, however, made no errors and completed a textbook drive to take the final. His win was all the more impressive as the Triumph had been struggling with a series of engine maladies that were only rectified as the cars lined up for the final race. Taber was followed home by 173 Forest and 499, Nick Deller.

More racing action is on the cards at Bovingdon on August 6th with the V8 Stock Cars Southern Championship, Superstox action and Banger team racing.
