17 year old Norwegian Andreas Mikkelsen was in a league of his own this weekend, as he comprehensively won the Coracle Stages Rally at Sweet Lamb. The youngster finished the event two minutes and fourteen seconds ahead of his nearest rival, having led the seven stage rally from start to finish in a complete show of dominance.Driving his immaculate RamSport prepared Ford Focus WRC02, Andreas and fellow Norwegian co-driver Ola Floene were looking forward to the opportunity of doing a reconnaissance of the stages prior to the event. The chance to make their own pace notes for the event was not something the team could afford to miss, and after the 'recce', both Andreas and Ola were looking forward to tackling seven special stages all housed within the Sweet Lamb testing complex near Llangurig in Mid Wales.Opposition would come in the shape of a variety of World Rally Cars on a day of sunshine and heavy downpours on the remote Welsh hills. Fellow Focus WRC driver Jon Ingram had entered, along with Hyundai Accent WRC driver Damien Cole, and the Skoda Octavia WRC of Nick Kenny. A relatively short opening stage would take the crews through the famous Sweet Lamb 'bowl', and Mikkelsen immediately showed his ability as he set fastest time on the opening stage. Hard charging Ingram was to retire on just the second stage, as he clipped the inside of a corner and rolled his Focus WRC. Mikkelsen however, was flying. The youngster was an astonishing 48 seconds in the lead after the opening two stages as he blitzed through the gravel roads with the swagger of a driver of much greater experience. The RamSport run machine was in fine fettle, and after building a solid lead, Andreas was content to take things easy as he kept up a decent pace to build a two minute lead. Entering the final 10 mile stage, the youngster was to suffer a puncture halfway through the stage which cost him some time. Despite that problem, Andreas coolly crossed the finish line to take his second victory in a month, and was delighted with another polished performance in front of some highly impressed spectators:'Another rally, and more experience under my belt' said the youngster. 'I'm really really pleased to take the win! Ola and I have really enjoyed the rally, and once again everyone has been so friendly to us. It is nice to have so many people come over and say how much they enjoy watching us drive. I'm glad that people enjoy what we are doing, as this is all good practice for me. Ola and I have not really competed together very much of course, so we are still working on our relationship, which is very good. The car was fantastic to drive today. RamSport made some changes to the set up before the event, and the car felt very well suited to the roads at Sweet Lamb. It was a shame that Jon Ingram retired early, but we enjoyed matching our times to the other drivers. Our recce was good, and the notes worked very well as well. Now we have a bigger challenge on the Isle of Man this weekend. We are both looking forward to driving the '05 Focus WRC on tarmac again, as I really don't have any experience of these roads. The rally looks very technical, so I think it will prove to be a very tough rally for all of us. I hope we can go for another good result'.Mikkelsen will indeed face his toughest test yet this week. The Rally Isle of Man has attracted a stellar entry of top drivers from the Irish and British Rally Championships. Experience of the roads on the small island is crucial, and Andreas will certainly have a lot to learn on August 3-5. The Norwegian's appearance on the event is one of the most eagerly awaited drives on the island in recent memory, and the youngster is already looking forward to battling with the best tarmac drivers on the surface he has least experience of.
