Manx matters for Milner
Double British Rally Champion Jonny Milner cannot wait to get started on the next round of the Tesco 99 British Rally Championship. Team Merlin International driver Milner, from Huggate, heads halfway across the Irish sea for Rally Isle of Man on August 3-5.Despite living in the rolling plains of North Yorkshire, Milner is an acknowledged Isle of Man specialist, and together with Welsh co-driver Nicky Beech, the pair have tasted success on the island together twice before. This year is a new challenge for the Merlin International, Pirelli Tyres, Eden Tyre Services, and Team Dynamics Alloy Wheels backed duo. This years event will see him tackle the event in his Tom Walkinshaw Group built Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX, in the Production Cup class.Milner's tale in 2006 is something of a mixture. 5th on the opening round showed promise, and the recent Jim Clark Rally was heading for a similar outcome, with Jonny leading the way in the Mitsubishi Evo Challenge. Unfortunately, a combination of suspension and transmission problems very late in the day dropped the pair way down the order, leaving Jonny bitterly disappointed.Heading to Douglas and the motorsport mad island is always an uplifting moment for Jonny, and this year is no exception. With two rounds of the BRC gone, Milner has no option but to crank up the boost in the John Bean Garage Equipment, Snap On Diagnostics, Goldline Bearings, NGK Spark Plugs, Sparco, and Ferodo Competition Brake Pads backed machine.Looking ahead to three days of relentless pounding around on the bumpy tarmac lanes native to the island, Milner was hopeful that a change in fortune would be on the cards in the MSR Motorsport run machine:'It hasn't quite clicked into place this year' said Jonny. 'The car is good, but we're just a bit lacking in overall pace. I feel as though I'm pushing hard, and both Nicky and I are frustrated at not being right at the sharp end of the results at the moment. The Isle of Man is a different kettle of fish though, as we've both competed there so many times and won there as well. It is fair to say we probably know the roads as well as some of the locals, so I'm hoping that will prove to be an advantage for us. We really need a bumper points haul this weekend to make up for the disappointment of the Jim Clark Rally. It was particularly disappointing given that we were heading for a good result, and maximum Evo Challenge points. Hopefully lady luck can smile on us at the Manx, and we can put in a very strong performance, and try to get that first win of the year under our belts.'Milner is certainly capable of putting in a winning performance. Jonny twice sprayed the champagne at the finish of the event at the TT Grandstand, and if all goes his way next weekend, he will hope for third time lucky on his favourite event in the motorsport calendar.
