Barlow to race Carrera Cup VIP car

Jason Barlow, editor of Car Magazine, will compete in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB at Snetterton on 12/13 August when he races the Vertu-backed VIP car in rounds 13 and 14 of the championship.Barlow has previously raced in the VW Cup and contested a full season in 2004, although he has only so far fitted in one race in 2006. Now, he will step up to the Carrera Cup in the new 997-model 911GT3 Cup car for the pair of races at the Norfolk track."I did my first race at Snetterton in September 2003 and I ran as high as seventh," he says. "Then I did a complete season in 2004 and the learning curve was pretty steep! I realised there was a lot more to it than meets the eye."Now, he is going to race the Carrera Cup car for the first time and admits to being a great Porsche fan. "I've lost count of the number of 911s that I've driven over the years and my favourite road car is the current 997-model Carrera S. It's just magnificent. It will be very special to race one."But he knows that racing in the Carrera Cup will present a major new challenge. "It's a bit of a step up and I'm nervous as hell! I'm aware that there are some very, very serious guys in the championship and I expect it to be a baptism of fire," says Barlow, who also writes a column for GQ Magazine. "I am looking forward to it, but I do have a certain amount of trepidation."At least the circuit will be familiar. "I've raced at Snetterton three times and it is a track I enjoy. My ambition is to enjoy it to the full."Barlow will drive the 911GT3 Cup car for the first time during the official Carrera Cup test session at Snetterton on Friday (12 August).
