Watts to complete Carrera Cup season

Danny Watts will complete the season in the 2006 Porsche Carrera Cup GB following a decision by Richard Westbrook and Team IRWIN with Red Line Racing to allow Watts to chase the championship title over the final eight races of the season.“After careful deliberation with Richard and the team, we are excited that Danny will remain in our car as this gives Team IRWIN with Red Line Racing a really good chance of winning the championship," explained Ian Watson, Vice President of Marketing for Europe – Asia/Pacific at IRWIN. "We would like to take this opportunity to thank Richard for his incredibly team oriented spirit and unselfish act to allow Danny to finish the season for the team," continued Watson. "We are a team oriented company and this decision is a key example of our company culture."Westbrook, who secured the Porsche Michelin Supercup title at Hockenheim last weekend, was central to the decision and first made the suggestion to team boss Simon Leonard. "I made the first phone call. I don’t want to stand in Simon's way and he wants to win the championship," said Westbrook. "I can’t win the championship, but Danny still could. I have strong relationships with IRWIN and Red Line and I want to see the team succeed as a whole.”Having won six races out of the eight races he has started so far this season, Watts now has a chance of rivaling Damien Faulkner and Tim Harvey for the title over the remaining eight races.“I'm very excited about the opportunity presented to me by Team IRWIN and I thank Richard for allowing me to continue the remainder of the season," said Watts. "I hope to continue the winning streak we have achieved so far.”Team Principal for Red Line Racing, Simon Leonard, said: "As a team we are very focused on winning, and the decision to keep Danny in the series is a decision that hopefully will give us a chance of winning the championship."Watts will continue his Carrera Cup campaign at Snetterton on 12/13 August, when Westbrook will be on hand to offer encouragement to the driver and team.
