Classics to join BHRC in 2007
The Classic stage rally category will become a full part of the MSA British Historic Rally Championship in 2007, making the BHRC a three-category championship. After four years of growth and development, the Classic cars in category 3 (1975-1981) will compete in the MSA BHRC in 2007 and beyond. Since being created by the Historic Rally Car Register for the 2003 season, the HRCR Classic Stage Rally Challenge has steadily gained support and more than 20 cars have already competed in the 2006 championship. In 2006, the Classic Challenge is running in parallel to the BHRC over a nine-event season, but the overall BHRC champion will come from either category 1 (historic) or category 2 (post-historic). In 2007, the overall BHRC champion could come from any one of the three categories.Having been a pacesetter since the start of the Classic category, Gareth Lloyd has applauded the move. "I'm sure there will be even more Classics about once it becomes part of the BHRC," says Lloyd. "It's definitely a positive move and it will increase the competition. I'm certainly planning to do it again next year!"Having managed the Classic Challenge since it was created, Simon Marks is looking forward to record numbers of category 3 cars competing next season. "This is a planned and logical step," says Marks. "We have a growing number of category 3 competitors and I'm taking a lot of enquiries from people preparing cars for next season. Being able to compete for the title of MSA British Historic Rally Champion is another boost for the category."In tandem with this change, Marks will assume the role of championship co-ordinator for the BHRC from 2007 onwards. He will take over management of categories 1 and 2 from Dave Lucas who is stepping down at the end of the current championship season.
