Title dream is over for Davies
Kevin Davies suffered an agonising end to his first ever Fiesta SportingTrophy campaign on this weekend's Park Systems Rally. The 21 year old from Llanfihangel-ar-Arth in West Wales still had a slender chance of winning the title going into the Newton Stewart based rally. Unfortunately for Davies, a mechanical failure would force him to retire from the event, leaving him with no chance to fight for the title honours on the final round.Backed by KJ's Eden Tours, David Harries & Co. and MM Ford of Aberystwyth, Kevin and co-driver Shaun O'Gorman from Newtown were desperately keen to push for victory in their Geoff Jones Motorsport run Fiesta ST150. The MSA British Rally Elite Academy driver has been one of the most consistent drivers within the Fiesta series this year, and knew that he needed to score heavily in the forests of South West Scotland to remain in contention for title honours.Davies came into the rally in top form. The Welshman defied his lack of tarmac experience to be the main pace setter on the recent Mewla National Rally, as he set a string of fastest times on the day. Buoyed by that performance, Davies and O'Gorman set off to tackle four special stages in the Galloway forest region with confidence. The pace would be hot from the start, and Kevin was keen to mix it with his regular championship rivals.Unfortunately, Davies was not to feature long in the battle. A serious oil leak was spotted on the Fiesta, and closer inspection revealed oil was pouring out of the gearbox of the Ford. Unable to change the unit or repair it, Davies was forced to retire from the rally, with no chance of lifting the title despite leading the series during the mid season. For Kevin, it was a bitterly disappointing blow. The www.rallycarsforsale.net and X-Cite Motorsport Supplies driver now heads to the final round of the championship determined to end the season on a real high:'It was just one of those things' said a dejected Davies. 'I had a brief encounter with a ditch which knocked the suspension slightly, so I'm wondering if we have damaged the gearbox at the same time. We'll know when we strip the car down. Unfortunately the oil was pouring out of the gearbox, so there is no point in destroying the gearbox for the sake of it. It was disappointing to end our championship hopes in such a way, but there is no point in feeling sorry for ourselves. We've given a very good account of ourselves all year long, and I'm going flat out for the win on the last rally - as I've nothing to lose. It would be fitting way to say thanks to everyone who has supported us this year, especially GJM and our sponsors who have been so enthusiastic about our progress'.Davies will end the championship with the Bulldog Clubmans Rally, based in Oswestry. Using the very best of the Mid Wales forestry roads, the event will suit Davies and his knowledge of Welsh roads. The youngster will be aiming to end the year on a high, and has some exciting future developments on the horizon as well.
