Lockie/Butler crew take 24 Hour victory

Calum Lockie, partnered by Paul White, Don Grice and Tony Brown scored an emphatic class victory for Butler Motorsport in the Silverstone 24 Hour race over the weekend (9/10 September).Racing White's BMW M3, the crew enjoyed a fantastic run to win the class by a substantial margin and finish ninth overall in Britain's 24-hour endurance race on the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit. In the run up to the race, the Butler Motorsport team worked a miracle to build up a new M3 from a bare shell in just five weeks after White's previous car was destroyed in an accident at Brands Hatch. The car was shaken down at two Gold Track organised track days at Silverstone. "That's all the running it got from brand new," said Lockie. "But the car just ran and ran and ran and the whole Butler team was fantastically well organised. This was their first 24-hour race, but they really thought about it and did a tremendous job."To the team's delight, Lockie set the class pole time in qualifying. Then, they concentrated on getting the other three drivers some experience of night running as only Lockie had previously contested a 24-hour race. Calum ran the first two-hour stint in the race on Saturday evening. "It was quite a quiet start, but I got past some more powerful cars and managed to get away from the Kevin Clarke M3, which was second fastest in our class." Their strategy was to run two-hour stints and their race took in only three unscheduled stops, including one for a fire extinguisher problem and one when the car was reported to be spilling fuel on its out-lap after a routine stop. "Don did the second stint and did a cracking job. In fact, all the others guys did a great job and there wasn't a scratch on the car. We didn’t have a single mechanical failure and the car was just the same at the end as it was at the start of the race," said Calum. However, they had one or two scares including a car spinning broadside across the track at Becketts right in front of Lockie during the night and only some very quick avoidance averted a big accident. Then, a three-hour safety car period was needed through the night when thick fog covered the circuit. "Tony did a very good job to keep concentration in that stint," said Calum. With an hour to go, they led the class by six laps and White duly ran the last stint to take the car over the line for a great result, winning the class and taking ninth overall. "Just nothing went wrong and massive praise is due to the whole crew at Butler Motorsport and the other drivers. They did an exceptional job.""Thanks are due to Paul White for inviting me to do the race, to my fellow drivers Paul, Tony and Don and to Butler Motorsport for a fantastic job. Melindi ran the whole race from the pit wall and kept us fed with information by the radio and controlled all the pit stops," said Calum. "Thanks also to Dunlop for excellent tyres, CG Lock and Brian James Trailers, the commentary team and all the marshals at Silverstone as well as the EERC team for running a great event."
